This isn’t just a factory-fresh Liberty with a sensible lift and safari rack, it’s a DIESEL factory-fresh Liberty with a sensible lift and safari rack.
I’ve seen this driving around town and it. is. immaculate. It might as well be a brand new vehicle.

They made diesel Liberties? Why?

Well it was designed from the start to be sold in Europe, where diesels are king, but the U.S. take rate must have been abysmal.
It made 160hp and 295lb-ft. From a 2.8 turbodiesel. Sounds like a pretty good starting point for an offroad build.

The Diesel take rate in America is almost as bad as the Jeep take rate in Europe.

its an odd thing what a diesel engine does to the value of the otherwise forgettable liberty.

Actually google tells me they sold 10k diesels in the U.S. in their first year of production. Not too shabby.

300ft-lbs is nothing to laugh at.

170 hp might get some sniggers.

Eh, if you look at other turbodiesel compact SUVs of the time like the Montero and Pathfinder, 170hp was right about average if not above.

oh sure, its not like the much heavier turbo diesel land cruisers were that much more powerful but 170 hp doesn’t exactly ignite the fire enough to overlook the jeeps...uh...libertyness.

Buddy rolled a liberty offroading about seven years ago. Rolled three times, had very minor superficial damage, and drove off without a problem. I was in the passenger seat. I still think they’re junk... But I have at least a bit of respect for ‘em after that. A diesel one could be a fun base to work with

it was a limited production run because they weren’t 50 state legal and because the regs were tightening up after 2 model years. That they sold as many as they did says something.

I was thinking of a diesel swap into my XJ and saw one online where somebody put one of these in one. It seemed to work quite well and was lighter than a 4bt. Then it was also vastly more expensive and they did it because they already had a wrecked diesel Liberty.

Had one go by me last night while out for a walk. Heard it before I saw it. Same color red too.
